Ercol transformation using 100% wool upholstery fabric

100% wool upholstery fabric

Ercol’s Windsor collection was originally created by founder, Lucian Ercolani, and has been in production since the late 1950’s. We love it’s archetypal style and the combination of traditional craft techniques and modern machining, which contributes to its iconic detailing.

So we’re always thrilled to have the opportunity to breathe new life into a classic piece with our 100% wool upholstery fabric created from the fleeces of another British icon, the Herdwick sheep. And a recent find gave us chance to do exactly that using the skills of local upholstery company, Westmorland Upholstery, who make magic with our Book of Bloom and Book of Thought fabrics.

STAGE ONE:

The makings of an absolute beauty, although the darker golden dawn staining isn’t as desirable as the light or straw wood colours so a stripping back job is next.

STAGE TWO:

Westmorland Upholstery achieved a beautiful finish after a labour of love to remove the dark staining. Anyone who has taken on an Ercol transformation will know this isn’t a quick task and requires skill and persistence in equal measure.

This iteration of the Windsor Two Seater Settee is webbed (some are sprung), and the next stage is to create the box cushions.

STAGE THREE:

The base cushion features our Bleawater Crag patterned fabric, and co-ordinating plain Lower Moss Crag fabric, while the back cushions combine Lower Moss Crag fabric and contrast piping in Dove Crag fabric, which links in with the base cushion perfectly. We’ve seen lots of examples of Windsor two-seaters styled without back cushions but the extra comfort is so inviting – and their curvaceous lines really add to the finished look.
